Why did you do this?

I’ve always loved songs about place. And my home state of Texas is the king of songs about place. I’ve long wondered just how many there are and figured the total would number in the thousands. I was right.

How did you do it?

I used azlyrics.com to search for Texas towns, roads, rivers, and other natural features found in songs. I started with “Texas River Song” by Townes Van Zandt before moving on to towns and cities. I began with small towns and worked my way up to big cities. By the time I finished, I was up to over 1,400 entries.

Did you attempt to find ALL entries for every city?

All but four. Four Texas cities (Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio) are found in so many songs that I simply put those searches on temporary hold. The entries for these four cities on this site are overwhelmingly songs where OTHER Texas cities are ALSO mentioned. Songs where ONLY Houston, Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio are mentioned? That’s probably another 1,000+ entries. I plan on including them over time.

How long did this take?

A LONG time. About 15 minutes a day over much of 2020 & 2021. The pandemic that year reignited the interest and also created the downtime needed to complete. Without Covid, this site probably wouldn’t exist.

What types of music will I find on this site?

Texas is a multinational state full of many different musical roots. I made an attempt to include all musical genres that reflect this diverse state. But Texas is known most for its country, western, & swing. Which is what you will overwhelmingly find here.

Any disappointments while completing this site?

Yes. I could not find any mentions of Sherman, TX, the home of my college alma mater Austin College. And with the exception of one comment by Aggie Robert Earl Keen, I could not find any mentions of College Station, TX the home of my high school alma mater A&M Consolidated.

But no worries. While you won’t find much Sherman or College Station on this site, you can still read two books I wrote about Austin College & A&M Consolidated High School by clicking here or here.

Are you all done?

NO! In addition to the four incomplete cities mentioned above, I’m sure I missed a few songs that mention small towns, rivers, or other features. Visitors to this site are encouraged to contact me to fill in the gaps in the City/Song/Artist table below.
